Georgia Electrical Exam Day: What to Bring to PSI

Most of what goes wrong on exam day is paperwork rather than code. Here's what PSI's bulletin says about identification, references, rescheduling and scores, plus the four Georgia cities PSI runs sites in and where that address list actually comes from.

Two forms of identification, and one of them is fussy

You present two forms of identification at check in. Temporary identification isn't accepted, which catches people who've just replaced a license.

The first has to be current, government issued, and carry your name, your signature and your photograph. The second has to carry your name and signature so the center can compare the two.

The name has to match. If yours has changed, bring the proof: a marriage license, a divorce decree or a court order. Sort that out days ahead rather than at the desk.

Your books get checked

Only the references on the bulletin's list may be used during the examination. Anything else is removed from you at check in.

Marking is allowed within limits. You may highlight, underline or tab with permanent tabs. Photocopied pages and handwritten notes aren't permitted, and additional material found inside a reference is confiscated.

That last word is worth reading twice. A loose formula sheet tucked into your code book isn't handed back at the end. The book rules page lists every reference and what each is for.

Eight hours, two parts, one break

The electrical exams are administered in two parts with eight hours allotted for both. Four hours for Part I, a break, then four hours for Part 2.

Low voltage exams are different: four hours, one sitting. The low voltage page has those counts.

Eat before you go and eat at the break. Two four hour halves is a physical test as much as a technical one, and the second half is where a tired candidate loses points on arithmetic they'd get right at nine in the morning.

Scheduling, rescheduling and no shows

Board approval comes first. After that, exams are administered by appointment Monday through Saturday, and you book at PSI's Georgia contractor page on its test taker site or by phone on 855-898-0711.

PSI's phone lines run 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Central Monday through Thursday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday.

You may reschedule once at no charge, and it has to be at least two business days before your appointment. Miss the appointment without doing that and you register and pay again, because exam fees aren't refundable.

Where the Georgia test centers are

Bulletin 4783 says the electrical exams are computer based tests given at PSI test centers across the Southeast, and it prints no Georgia addresses at all.

PSI's bulletin for the sister construction division of the same Georgia board does print four Georgia sites, and those are the ones our city pages use.

Treat those as PSI's Georgia sites rather than as a list published in the electrical bulletin, and confirm your site when you book. The same bulletin notes that PSI has centers in many other regions and that candidates may test at any of them.

Accommodations

PSI says it complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act and provides accommodations on a completed request form. Wheelchair access is available at all PSI test centers.

Ask early. An accommodation request is a form that has to be processed before your appointment rather than a note you hand over on the day.

Getting your score

Scores are given to you in person in print, or sent by US mail.

PSI also sends the board an official score report, and the bulletin says that can take up to six weeks to arrive. So knowing you passed and holding a license are two different dates.

Plan the gap. If your work depends on the license rather than the result, build six weeks into whatever you've promised.

Questions people ask

What ID do I need for the Georgia electrical exam?

Two forms. One current government issued document with your name, signature and photograph, and a second carrying your name and signature. Temporary IDs aren't accepted.

Can I bring my own code book?

Yes, if it's on the bulletin's reference list, which includes the Georgia State Electrical 2023 National Electrical Code or the NEC Handbook. Anything not on the list is removed at check in.

Can I tab my code book?

Permanent tabs, highlighting and underlining are allowed. Photocopies and handwritten notes aren't, and extra material found inside a book is confiscated.

Where can I take the Georgia electrical exam?

PSI runs Georgia sites in Duluth, Marietta, Macon and Tifton. Those addresses come from PSI's bulletin for the sister construction division, because the electrical bulletin lists no Georgia addresses.

Can I reschedule my PSI appointment?

Once at no charge, and at least two business days before the appointment. A no show means a new registration and a new fee, since exam fees aren't refundable.

How long until I get my result?

You get your score in print at the center or by US mail. The official report to the board can take up to six weeks, which is what holds up the license rather than the result.

Are the exams held on Saturdays?

The bulletin says examinations are administered by appointment Monday through Saturday, so yes, subject to what your chosen site has open.
