Georgia Electrical Exam Content: Every Area and Count

PSI publishes the content outline for both Georgia electrical exams, and it's the page in the bulletin worth reading twice. Here's every area with its question count, what each one covers in practice, and where the Class I and Class II papers pull apart.

The shape of both papers

Class I and Class II both carry 140 scored questions. Class I adds 15 pretest items for 155 in all, Class II adds 22 for 162.

Both split the same way at the top level: 30 scored questions on regulations, laws and administrative functions, and 110 on technical functions.

Eight hours covers both parts, four hours each side of a break. That's roughly three minutes an item on Class I and a little under three on Class II.

Regulations, laws and administrative functions: 30 questions

Identical on both papers, and identical in weight: a bit over a fifth of your score.

The NASCLA Contractors Guide to Business, Law, and Project Management for Georgia carries most of this. It's the reference people leave until the last week, and thirty questions is more than the transformer and rotating equipment blocks put together on a Class I paper.

Technical functions on Class I: 110 questions

Class I is the restricted license, held to single phase work at or below the amperage in the rule, and the weighting follows that. Interior systems and devices carry the paper.

Technical functions on Class II: 110 questions

Transformers triple, from 7 to 21. Rotating equipment goes from 9 to 16. Basic circuits, controls and interior systems all come down to make room.

That's the fact to take away from this page if you're sitting Class II. Study the Class I weighting and you'll under-prepare the two areas that grew most.

What sits inside each technical area

PSI names the areas and not the code articles, so this is where our reading of the outline starts and the bulletin stops. Treat it as a study map rather than as PSI's own list.

Basic electrical circuits

Ohm's law, series and parallel, power, voltage drop, conductor properties. The Ohm's law calculator and the voltage drop calculator both show the working.

Controls and devices

Switches, receptacles, panelboards and disconnects, in Articles 404, 406 and 408 of your 2023 book, along with the branch circuit requirements in Article 210.

Rotating equipment

Article 430. Full load current, conductor sizing, overload protection and the short circuit device, each from its own table. The motor calculator lays those four out in order.

Transformers

Article 450, with overcurrent protection at 450.3 in your 2023 book (450.5 in the 2026 book our material is written on). kVA to amps, primary and secondary, and the percentages. The transformer calculator works it through.

Interior electrical systems

The largest Class I block. Branch circuits and load calculations in Articles 210 and 220 of the 2023 book, conductor ampacity in Article 310, boxes in Article 314, overcurrent in Article 240, grounding and bonding in Article 250, and the wiring methods in Chapter 3.

Special equipment, conditions and locations

Twenty one questions on both papers, and the widest area on the outline. Hazardous locations, health care, pools and spas, marinas, photovoltaic systems, agricultural buildings and the rest of Chapters 5 and 6.

How to turn the outline into a study week

Weight your hours the way the paper is weighted, not the way your interest is. Six blocks of technical questions plus one block of business and law, and you know the size of each.

Then find your own weak areas rather than guessing. The diagnostic runs twenty four questions across the main areas and ranks them worst first.

Work the two worst as topic sets with your code book open, then re-run the diagnostic a week later. The study plan lays that out over six weeks.

Questions people ask

What is on the Georgia electrical contractor exam?

Thirty scored questions on regulations, laws and administrative functions, and 110 on technical functions, on both the Class I and Class II papers. The technical half splits into six areas with published counts.

How many business and law questions are there?

Thirty of the 140 scored questions, on both papers. That breaks down as 10 on laws, 9 on regulations, 6 on administrative requirements and 5 on planning and organizing work.

Where do Class I and Class II differ?

Only inside the technical half. Transformers go from 7 questions on Class I to 21 on Class II, and rotating equipment from 9 to 16, while basic circuits, controls and interior systems all come down.

Which area carries the most questions?

On Class I it's interior electrical systems at 30. On Class II the technical half is flatter, with interior systems at 23 and special equipment, transformers and conditions all at 21.

Does PSI publish which code articles each area covers?

No. The bulletin names the areas and the counts, not the articles. The article map on this page is our reading of the outline, and we say so.

Is the content outline the same for the low voltage exams?

No. Those split into regulations, laws and administrative functions and installation and servicing, with about three quarters of each paper in the second category.
