The license a Marietta electrician needs

The license that matters here is the state one. The Georgia Secretary of State's Division of Electrical Contractors issues Class I restricted and Class II unrestricted electrical contractor licenses, and its FAQ says the board licenses electrical contractors, not electricians.

So there's no journeyman card to earn and no city test to sit. You work for a licensed electrical contractor, log four years of installation work under that license, then apply through the GOALS portal and sit the PSI exam.

What local government can add

Attorney General Opinion 99-2 concludes that a local government may not require a state licensed electrical contractor to hold a local license or pass a local exam, except as O.C.G.A. 43-14-12 allows. That section lets local governments adopt local building codes and suspend licenses.

What cities and counties do charge is an occupation tax or business license. We found no Marietta or Cobb County electrician card in this research, and we don't name a local permit rule we haven't read. Check with the city before you pull your first permit here.

PSI lists four Georgia sites: Duluth at 3505 Koger Blvd Suite 175, Marietta at 2100 Roswell Road NE Suite 2128, Macon at 3902 Northside Dr Suite C5 and Tifton at 251 Southwell Blvd Suite A.

Those addresses come from PSI's bulletin for the sister division of the same state board rather than from bulletin 4783, which names no Georgia addresses and says only that the electrical exams run at PSI centers across the Southeast. Confirm the site when you schedule at test-takers.psiexams.com/gaco or on 855-898-0711.

Where to train around Marietta

Chattahoochee Technical College

The main campus is at 980 South Cobb Drive, Marietta, GA 30060. Its Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology program runs as an Associate of Applied Science and as technical certificates of credit at the Marietta and North Metro campuses, preparing technicians who develop, maintain and repair electronic equipment, computer hardware and medical monitoring devices. The metro apprenticeships

IBEW Local 613 trains at 6601 Bay Circle, Peachtree Corners, on a four year registered apprenticeship, with an application window of February 1, 2026 to March 31, 2026. The IEC Atlanta and Georgia Chapters program at 330 Research Court runs four years with 8,000 hours of on the job training and 576 classroom hours, and asks that you be employed by a member contractor.

Both count as work under a licensed contractor, which is the only kind of experience the board credits.

What the work pays around Marietta

Electricians in the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell area had a median wage of $28.20 an hour and $58,650 a year in the May 2025 wage data republished by O*NET from the Bureau of Labor Statistics series. Statewide the median is $28.04 and $58,320, and the national median in the same release is $30.38 and $63,190.

Marietta sits inside that metro area, so this is the figure that covers Cobb County.
