Athens GA Electrician License: Classes and the Exam

Athens has one electrical program in town and no IBEW local, so the training map here is shorter than Atlanta's. The license is the state's either way, and the four years under a licensed contractor are what get you to the exam.

The license an Athens electrician needs

The license that matters here is the state one. The Georgia Secretary of State's Division of Electrical Contractors issues Class I restricted and Class II unrestricted electrical contractor licenses, and its FAQ says the board licenses electrical contractors, not electricians.

So there's no journeyman card to earn and no city test to sit. You work for a licensed electrical contractor, log four years of installation work under that license, then apply through the GOALS portal and sit the PSI exam.

What Athens-Clarke County handles

The county publishes its permit applications, including an electrical permit application, on its permit application forms page.

We could not open the electrical permit application itself, so we don't state what it asks a contractor for. Call the county before you plan around it.

What we can say is what the state says. Attorney General Opinion 99-2 concludes a local government may not require a state licensed electrical contractor to hold a local license or pass a local exam, except as O.C.G.A. 43-14-12 allows, which covers building codes and license suspensions.

Athens Technical College

Electrical Construction Systems Technology runs on the Athens campus. The college says it prepares graduates for careers as electricians specializing in either construction installation or maintenance of electrical systems, following state and local building codes.

No IBEW local here

The Georgia Building Trades locals page lists no IBEW local for Athens. The closest registered apprenticeships we could confirm are in Atlanta, through IBEW Local 613 at the Peachtree Corners training center and through the IEC Atlanta and Georgia Chapters program.

Both are four year programs and both count as work, not just school, which matters because the board credits experience gained under an active licensed electrical contractor.

Where you sit the exam

PSI lists no test center in Athens. The closest of its four Georgia sites are Duluth and Marietta.

Those addresses come from PSI's bulletin for the sister division of the same state board rather than from bulletin 4783, which names no Georgia addresses and says only that the electrical exams run at PSI centers across the Southeast. What the work pays around Athens

Electricians in the Athens-Clarke County area had a median wage of $23.92 an hour and $49,750 a year in the May 2025 wage data republished by O*NET from the Bureau of Labor Statistics series. Statewide the median is $28.04 and $58,320, and the national median in the same release is $30.38 and $63,190.

Those are medians for every electrician counted in the area, from first year helpers to people running work. The static Bureau of Labor Statistics tables for states and metros have been retired, which is why the figure comes from O*NET's republished version of the same series.
