Georgia Electrical License Fees and Renewal: The Dates

The renewal cycle is easy: two years, expiring June 30 of even numbered years, done in the GOALS portal. The fees are not, because three official Georgia pages print three different sets. We give you all three and tell you where the live number lives.

The renewal cycle

Electrical contractor licenses are biennial. The board's fee schedule prints the schedule as expiring June 30 of even years, and the how-to guide says renewal has to be completed by June 30 of even numbered years.

The board's FAQ puts the renewal window at April through June of even years and says licenses renew online through the GOALS portal.

The board page states it for the current cycle: the license expires June 30, 2026.

The late window, and the date that doesn't match

Miss June 30 and there's a late renewal period. Two board sources give it different end dates.

Both were read on the same day from the state's own site. Work to July 31 and treat anything after that as a bonus, and confirm with the board if you're going to be close.

The fee schedule numbers

These are the electrical rows on the board's fee schedule:

Read the rows carefully on that page, because it covers every trade the board licenses. The $45.00 and $70.00 figures people quote as electrical renewal and late renewal are the Journeyman Plumber and Utility Foreman rows.

The schedule prints no plain renewal row for electrical contractors, and the board's how-to guide prints no renewal figure either. Both send you to the live schedule in the GOALS portal, so read the renewal total there before you pay.

The numbers on the forms

The application forms print totals rather than parts, and they don't match the schedule above:

All three line up with the schedule once you add the processing fee. The $160 reinstatement total is the schedule's $150.00 lapse figure plus the $10 processing fee.

The numbers in the how-to guide

The board's how-to guide prints a third set: $110 for initial restricted or non-restricted applications, and $310 for a non-restricted reinstatement under three years.

The guide itself points to the live schedule in the portal at goals.sos.ga.gov, which is where the current number will be. That page runs on JavaScript and returned an error rather than data when we fetched it, so we can't print what it says today.

Our advice is simple. Read the total in GOALS at the moment you pay, and don't budget from any published PDF, including the ones above.

What happens if it lapses

Under three years. The how-to guide lists continuing education, a background check and reinstatement fees. The form for this path is 44 Electrical - Reinstatement lapsed less than 3 yrs.

Three years or more. Passing an exam is required before a license is issued, on top of work experience documentation, three references, a background check and reinstatement fees. The form is 44 Electrical - Initial or Reinstatement Lapsed 3+ yrs (exam required), and its title says it.

The fee schedule adds re-examination to both lapse categories over 30 days, which is stricter than the guide's under three year path. Another place the sources don't line up, and another reason to call before you plan.

Continuing education comes first

The board's continuing education page says courses have to be completed before you apply for renewal, not after. Four hours a year, eight over the two year period.

Since January 1, 2026 licensees register and report continuing education through CE Broker. The continuing education page covers what counts, who provides it and how long to keep the certificates.

Where all of this happens

The GOALS portal, for applications, renewals and fees. The board's Licensing Division is in Macon and takes calls at 404-424-9966, per the division page.

The mailing address for the board is 214 State Capitol, Atlanta, Georgia 30334. Paper applications aren't accepted, so mail is for correspondence rather than filings.

Questions people ask

When does a Georgia electrical contractor license expire?

June 30 of even numbered years. The board page states the current cycle expires June 30, 2026, and the FAQ puts the renewal window at April through June of even years.

How much is the Georgia electrical license renewal fee?

The board's fee schedule prints no plain renewal row for electrical contractors, and the how-to guide prints no renewal figure either. Both send you to the live schedule in the GOALS portal, so read the total there before you pay. The schedule does print $100.00 for late renewal within 30 days of the expiration date.

How long is the late renewal window?

The board page says July 1, 2026 to August 15, 2026. The how-to guide and the fee schedule say July 1 to July 31. Both are current board sources, so plan for July 31.

What happens if my Georgia electrical license expires?

Under three years, reinstatement means continuing education, a background check and fees. Three years or more, you have to pass an exam again before a license is issued, plus experience documentation, references, a background check and fees.

Why do the fees differ between board pages?

Three official pages print three sets: the board's fee schedule, the application forms and the how-to guide. We list all three rather than pick one. The live schedule inside the GOALS portal is the number that governs.

Do I have to do continuing education before renewing?
